I was asked a few times - not only on dA - WHY exactly I take photos.
Honestly, I see no particular reason to do that.
But I have a few - quite important - quotations, which may include answer... and, last but not least, they can describe my opinion about photography in general.
"There was a French poet who claimed that photography is a poorhouse for unsuccessful painters."
"I'm just a routine tourist, satisfied with my fate, I'm going through my life with my camera, which is just a pretext for me to feel myself alive, as once, in these old days, when all people had carried their shadows upon their feet."
"You know, I'd still photograph, even if I had no film in my camera".
"I'd like to write a story or to make a film about a Templar and his killed friends, about an enamoured samurai, about Russian earl, who drinks like a dragon and plays in games of chance in Monte Carlo, and then he becomes a doorman in Le Grand Vélfour - but I have no talent. So, I'm just looking. I'm taking photos."
These quotes describes my opinion about photography - and, perhaps, they show why actually do I take photos myself.
I'd like to write a great story, perhaps a fantasy one - but I have no skills and no ideas to do so. I'd like to paint a picture - but I'm not good enough in painting or drawing. I'd like to write a poem... but everything was written long ago, someone has painted something I wanted to paint...
So I just take photos. Sometimes I delete them just after taking - but sometimes they are better, sometimes they are even quite good - and then I can submit them here or simply keep them in my photo album, knowing that there is a little piece of art I managed to create on my own... something that allows me to express (and understand) myself, a little bit at least... maybe?
I photograph, because I can feel, that I really live. Because I cannot live without my camera now. I'm looking at the world around me through the lenses of my camera.
It's just me.
And I'm getting more and more despaired because I have
NO TIME
to photograph lately. At all.
To all my friends, watchers and visitors, who have photos in their galleries - do not be miffed because of this journal entry. It wasn't intended to offend anyone. You're great artist, despite of my opinions.
Maybe I'm just a bit bitter right now...
Quotations are from Arturo Pérez-Reverte's "The Painter of Battles" ("Batalista" in Polish).
It's my translation, 'cause I haven't got neither Spanish nor English version of this book. Perhaps it isn't good at all. Sorry for it.
